Just a murder case? Or a mirror to society?
The murder of a husband on his honeymoon by a person who is meant to be his closest , his own partner, his wife . This tragic case has left the whole country in state of shock . The Sonam Raghuvanshi case - Where the accused wife along with his lover had been found out killing the husband so shortly after marriage to be with her lover .
But here the question arises that Is this case an another crime story or a warning bell to realise where our society is leading? As the investigation opens out , we must should take a time to think not only about what happened but also that why something so horrible is happening repeatedly in the society.
The Illusion of perfect marriages:
In India weddings are not less than festivals, often celebrated with happiness, rituals , lots of food , music , dance and the most important thing Societal expectations. In a country like India , people don't get married when they are ready , instead they get married when the society tells them it's time . The marriage is not a personal choice but a duty to satisfy parental and Societal expectations. Couples are forced for lifelong commitments with a very little or sometimes zero understanding of each other , with no compatibility and completely different life goals which often lead to either mental breakdown ,lifelong trauma , suicides or sometimes results in a severe crime like this .
Maybe the Sonam Raghuvanshi case too is one of the victim of the heinous societal pressure or maybe it stems for an underlying psychological struggle that went unnoticed.
Gender equality peaked here? Breaking the stereotypes:
Society often relate males with violence and aggression whereas females are seen as caregivers , nurturers or victims . So when suddenly women's are seen committing crimes especially as cruel as murder - it somewhere shakes the whole societal narrative and structure .
And because of this, the reactions also vary from people to people , some look towards it as an heartless violent crime , asking for harsh punishments. While others lean towards a little sympathy , trying to justify the act by claiming reasons like psychological issues , emotionally unstable etc .
But the truth that should be acknowledged at the first place is only that Crime has no gender . It's high time that society should stop associating males with violence and crimes , as males could also be victims , likewise females could be a perpetrators. So the crime must be seen from a balanced point of view regardless of accused gender .
Because these biases could have real consequences in the legal system . Women may be treated with tenderness or conversely can be judged more harshly for breaking the typical "ideal woman " mold.
The Sonam Raghuvanshi case forces us to see beyond the lens of the gender biasness and contradictory view of "Good woman vs Bad woman".
And instead analyze the situation as an individual ,the choices made, the context involved, and the systems that may have failed before the crime occurred.
Breaking this stereotype is essential, not for justifying women but for acknowledging and realising that every individual irrespective of gender has the capacity for both empathy and cruelty. Only then the real justice will be served.
A Generation Numb to Emotion:
There were a time when the core values of society were human connentions , emotional attachment and empathy towards one another . Be it within families, friendships or even with strangers crossing paths .
But today these values has gone missing . We are slowly turning into robots who feel less , connects less and understands less . Emotional detachment has increased at that extend that sensitivity towards human life is fading rapidly.
Perhaps this emotional detachment could also be a reason behind ,the increasing brutal crime rates .
And this has become more dangerous than ever because crimes are now not committed in the moment of rage , but with proper planning and calmness .
Role of media , Desensitizing the generation:
The media had played a very crucial role in adding to this decaying society . The excessive glorification of violence and constant exposure to violent contents through media , whether it be through movies , news or even cartoons - had made brutality feel normal . The repeated portrayals of violence has made the generation desensitized , individuals has become so comfortable to violence that they do not react to it as they should , if they had not seen it on the screen .
Consequently people had started viewing violence as
a normalised view of conflict resolution.
And not only this for gaining TRPs they often sensationalises cases with headlines like "Honeymoon Horror" , "Bride turns into killer" . While each stories attracts clicks , they also dehumanise the people involved. Real life pain and trauma limits under hashtags and breaking news .
The Wake-up call for Society :
The Sonam Raghuvanshi case is not just another crime story that should be seen , talked about and then forgotten. It's a sadistic mirror to our society .
It forces us to re- think and re-construct the pre existing structure of marriages and commitments. Also confronts hard truth about ignorance of mental health , biasness in viewing crimes according to gender and gives reality check to people about the mean world in which we are living .
More than that, it shows us what happens when a society loses its emotional compass. When we stop teaching our children how to feel, how to express, how to connect , When Humanity loses it's charm. When the pressure to follow conventional setups becomes stronger than the desire to understand. When violence stops shocking us , then surely the society is leading towards the Kaliyuga which had been described in our scriptures.
Because justice is not only about punishing the guilty—it is also about healing a broken system , a broken society that allowed the crime to happen in the first place.
